Pixel 8 & 8 Pro, Worth $100 more?
Should You upgrade your Pixel this year? Or is it a no go ?
The technology giant Google recently launched a new addition to the Pixel series, the Pixel 8 and the Pixel 8 Pro coming in hot at around $699 and $999 respectively, which is $100 more than the 7 series. Let's clear the fuzz around it...
Tensor G3:
-
Following the tradition, the 8 series is powered by the new and improved Tensor G3, leveraging its AI capabilities, and is said to be 10x faster and more complex than the G1, the real-life benchmarks are still to be announced, but expect at least an 18% improvement over the last year. But a disappointment may be coming in the GPU department.
Pixel 7 owners need not worry about the performance, but you might wanna consider if you have the 6 series or less ; )
The "Actua" Display:
With all the other companies coming up with new branding names for their display technologies, google also decided to do the same and named it "Acuta" (Now, what the "actua" ** !!!).
Jokes aside, it is an impressive display, with a 6.7-inch LTPO panel on 8 Pro (Super Actua Display) with a brilliant 2400 nits of brightness which is crisp and clear in even direct sunlight and up to 120Hz.
Coming to the Pixel 8 boasts just the Actua Display, which is a 6.2-inch AMOLED non-LTPO panel that can go from 60 up to 120Hz rather than 90, with a max brightness of 1400nits which is respectable.
Cameras:
The Pixel 8 Pro debuts with a new 48MP ultrawide camera which can go up to 2cm in macro mode, the main sensor is a 50MP unit, with a slightly larger f1.7 lens, and the 5x telephoto module also got an improvement with a new 48MP sensor.
But the more important thing is, that Google announced many new modes as well as AI features, which further improves the arsenal.
Starting with night sight in videos making videos shot in dark environments brighter and "Video Boost" which uses dual exposure to cover everything and unlike HDR doesn't blend multiple separate shots.
Whereas Pixel 8 still uses a 50MP (wide) and 12MP (ultrawide) sensor, which is still great.
Battery (The Juice):
There isn't much improvement in the battery department this time, with the Pixel 8 packing a 4,575 mAh cell and the 8 Pro with a 5,050 mAh cell, as compared to 4355mAh and 5000mAh from the previous generation. To be honest, it is kind of okay, as Google mentioned that the new chip is more efficient, expect it to run for a full day, at max.
The "A.I." thingy:
We still remember all the A.I.'s said during the last launch, but this time it's quite impressive, and Google has put a lot of effort into adding useful features, and some not-so-useful ones.
Assistant with Bard: Google Assistant has been given the superbrains of Bard, and it now is more useful and can even read you all the unread emails and much more.
Audio magic eraser: As the name suggests, it removes all the excess and unnecessary noise from the audio.
Zoom enhance: The new pixels will now use generative AI to fill in the gap between pixels while taking zoomed-in photos, making the photos less noisy and more smooth.
Best Take (they taking it too far I swear): You can now literally swap the faces of humans with different expressions after the photo is taken, so that you do not need to worry about waiting for the perfect shot. But still, at the end of the day, it is artificial.
AND SO MUCH MORE WHICH IS UNRELEASED.
A thermometer, wait really !!?
The Pixel 8 Pro has a thermal sensor built into its camera visor, as a result, you can now measure the temperature of different types of stuff and even the human body, this might seem like a gimmick, but in certain scenarios, it can be really useful, in medical treatment as well as cooking.
And many developers will find useful and innovative ways to make the most out of it.
PRICING/Conclusion:
After checking out every major change, if you're a series 7 user, it doesn't make any sense to upgrade unless you're a hardcore photographer, as the A.I. features are really useful. As for series 6 users, it's a worthy upgrade, and if you were looking to upgrade, this is your call.
But still, is the $699(₹73000 appx) Price tag justified? I'll leave that up to you.
